Flocke kind of forced Richard to bring him in, and then when Richard protested Ben's presence, Flocke basically said "fuck off" and they went in.

Not saying your wrong, but maybe there's something to the fact that they weren't invited in, but still got in there.

Maybe the only person truly invited in will be Jacob's eventual successor?Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18251115808296296748noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-35616056.post-43143265368386400302010-03-29T21:01:12.317-04:002010-03-29T21:01:12.317-04:00I read a theory that Jacob could be killed because...I read a theory that Jacob could be killed because they were in the statue. That is his weakness. Remember when Richard asked about the statue Jacob replied cryptically. I think it was something to the effect that only those invited were allowed in. He let Ben in to see if Ben would prove him right about people. That is why he was surprised and disappointed by the knife.Burgehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04234955947873617669noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-35616056.post-2619335571595642592010-03-29T14:26:10.102-04:002010-03-29T14:26:10.102-04:00Anon #2:

But yeah, I don't think it's Purgatory either.Rutherfordhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10671119877698247487noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-35616056.post-5758713042197365802010-03-29T14:23:28.957-04:002010-03-29T14:23:28.957-04:00Anonymous #1:

Meaning, that from start to finish, the Sideways World has its own past, present, and future....and it never explicitly overlaps with what we've already seen on the show. Some folks think that the Sideways was born from "The Incident," but I think that it's simply another version of our characters' lives.

(Meaning, that in the Sideways Ben and Roger still went to the Island, but they left before Ben was ever shot and he never crossed over to the other side...likely because the other side didn't exist.)

Moreover, I think the realities may not be running in a parallel fashion...if my theory that what you do in the Island world effects your "self" in the Sideways, then I think the two realities run one after another, with the Sideways coming after the Island world. Think of the Sideways as something like a "re-do" after the first world ends. Reincarnation, maybe?

If true, it makes sense that due to things like "destiny" and "fate", we see very similar events occur in the re-do, but since the characters make all decisions without a higher power to influence them, their overall situations might be slightly different too...for better or worse. I think this type of individuality of free will leads me to think that both MIB and Jacob don't exist in this world, because man is able to do right by himself.

Then again, who fucking knows ;) Thanks for the comment!Rutherfordhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10671119877698247487noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-35616056.post-38826651908539887192010-03-29T14:10:17.743-04:002010-03-29T14:10:17.743-04:00JB - thanks for the comment. To answer your quest...JB - thanks for the comment. To answer your questions (or try to at least):

1) the white stone represents Jacob's point of view, and if you recall the episode where MIB brings Sawyer to the cave, there is a scale that has the black stone on one side and the white stone on the other (representing the "balance of power" on the Island). Jacob had Richard bring the white stone to MIB as a bit of a inside joke...telling him in so many words that "he ain't going anywhere." So when MIB does finally succeed in killing Jacob through Ben, he takes the White Stone and throws it into the ocean from the Cave in "The Substitute."

2)The name of the shipmate was Jonas Whitfield. At first I thought I heard "Widmore", but I was wrong. His name, at this time, doesn't ring any bells.Rutherfordhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10671119877698247487noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-35616056.post-57235207441048462322010-03-29T13:13:15.672-04:002010-03-29T13:13:15.672-04:00The purgatory theory fails for me because of the f...The purgatory theory fails for me because of the fact that some losties made it home and interacted with society.

I like the direction about the purpose of life and the age old question, "what does it all mean?". Clearly all of the characters are "lost" souls with either no or misguided spirituality. Maybe the spin is it's Jacob that's lost and he brought all of these people to him with similar confusion and internal struggles to figure it all out. Perhaps he was a replacement for someone else long ago and never had all of his questions answered. Of course, I have no evidence of this theory. It's just a baseless thought.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-35616056.post-16264771426014316622010-03-29T10:28:22.122-04:002010-03-29T10:28:22.122-04:00i have a question about the whole jacob and MIB an...i have a question about the whole jacob and MIB and others and losties being different than DHARMA, therefore being able to be separated. did the DHARMA folks ever see the black smoke? i can't remember. because if they did, then jacob and MIB did have something to do with them. and in that same vein, when ben (dharma) gets shot, he goes to live with richard so wouldn't that mean that the two ARE related?Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-35616056.post-66657708054883670332010-03-28T22:58:35.436-04:002010-03-28T22:58:35.436-04:00I read your posts every week and this week like al...I read your posts every week and this week like all the others makes me think - so thanks!

Great catch on Hanso as the captain, not sure how I missed it.

I think the island as Purgatory has legs because Purgatory, according to certain religions is Earth, so why not have a struggle on an island that can purge humanity or damn it.
